A HISTORICAL DAY

The beginning of industrial production of cameras in Dresden

The history of photography in Dresden began on October 31, 1839. The French Government released the Daguerre type photograph technology, for free use throughout the world. In no time at all several manufacturers of cameras set up in Dresden and a new branch of industry was founded in this region.

In 1919 the first camera was produced by Kamera-Werkstätten. By the end of the thirties, Charles A. Noble, form Detroit, U.S.A purchased the company. At this time, the single lens reflex camera "Pilot" 6x6, the enlarger "Praxidos" and the projector "Episkop" was being produced.

It was easy to see that the increasing demand for these cameras required enlarged premises. That is why, the building at Bismarkstraße 56 was purchased in the middle of 1939.

In the following period the first 35 mm single lens reflex camera "Praktiflex" was developed and manufactured at Bismarkstraße 56. In that time a prism was found which gives an upright picture in the finder. Nowadays this prism is still used.

1920

The legendary "Patent-Etui-Kamera" of Kamera-Werkstätten from 1920, which was extremely flat when folded up (35 mm).

1939

The two single lens reflex camera "Pilot Super" with metal leaf shutter: The picture size is 4,5 x 6,0 cm - a camera that was very much in demand at the time and extremely reliable.

1945

Faces of the "Praktiflex": During the Soviet Occupation approximately 50.000 cameras were produced from May to December 1945. All these units were taken over as reparations.

1952

From 1947 to 1952 the "Praktiflex" was improved and developed into "Practica", and finally into "Praktina". By the way, the "Praktina" was the first 35 mm single lens reflex camera available wordlwide, to be offered as a camera system.

1992

Panoramic camera NOBLEX PRO 150: Developed in 1992 after the principle of the natural space perception of the human vision - a unique camera design.

1994

NOBLEX 135: The counterpart of the big NOBLEX Pro. This camera combines many merits in very little space. The dream of taking photographs which correspond to the natural vision of the human eye became true in the design from Kamera Werk Dresden.

1996

In 1996 the first CMOS camera developed by our company was introduced. The sector of business 'Industrial Camera Systems' arising from this introduction has been growing since then and made it possible to take the varied tasks of surveillance technology, process control and the requirements of a cost-saving visualization of high dynamic and/or high speed events into account. Especially the worldwide application in airplane docking systems is an example for quality, reliability and durability of the camera systems produced by KAMERA WERK DRESDEN.
